چکیده

Lung thermal ablation can be used to treat both primary and secondary thoracic malignancies. Evidence to support its use, particularly with metastases from colonic primary tumours, is now strong, with survival data approaching that seen after surgery. Because of this the use of ablative techniques (particularly thermal ablation) is growing and the Royal College of Radiologists (UK) predict that the number of patients who could benefit from such treatment may reach in excess of 5,000 per year. While thermal ablation is often restricted to tertiary referral units, general radiologists are frequently expected to interpret post-treatment imaging, often performed in the context of acute complications which can occur after discharge. Although ablation is generally a safe technique with a specific mortality rate of between 1 and 2.6% and a major complication rate (as defined by the Society of Interventional Radiology as one requiring remedial action or where the patient experiences significant morbidity) of 17.1%, it is important for all radiologists to be aware of the range of post-treatment appearances. This pictorial review will cover all the normal and abnormal appearances encountered after lung ablations, based upon a review of the literature and our experience of over 200 ablations. Emphasis is given to the range of normal appearances and there will be discussion outlining when further investigation or intervention is required post ablation.

Pelvi-perineal flap reconstruction: normal imaging appearances and post-operative complications on cross-sectional imaging

Radical pelvic surgery is often required in patients with advanced, persistent or recurrent gynaecological and anorectal malignancies. In the last decade, pedicled flap reconstructions have been increasingly used for pelvic floor and neovaginal reconstruction, introducing well-vascularised non-irradiated tissue into the wound cavity and hence reducing wound complications. The aim of this pictor...

Hysterosalpingography in the assessment of congenital cervical Anomalies: Pictorial Review

Cervical abnormalities may be congenital or acquired. Congenital anomalies of the cervix are rarely isolated, and more commonly accompany other uterine anomalies. Various imaging tools have been used in the assessment of Mullerian duct anomalies (MDAs). Currently, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the modality of choice for definitive diagnosis and classification of the MDAs. Hysterosalpingog...

Uterine Leiomyoma: Hysterosalpingographic Appearances

Uterine leiomyoma is the most common benign tumor of genital tract. The etiology of myomas is unknown. Leiomyoma shows a broad spectrum of radiographic appearances depending on the number, size, and location of the tumor. The diagnostic method for uterine leiomyomas is based primarily on the clinical situation. Despite of the varied diagnostic options such as; transvaginal sonography, sonohyste...

The surgical management of obesity with emphasis on the role of post operative imaging

The role of surgery in the morbidly obese is becoming more prominent. There are a variety of surgical approaches which can be used and radiology plays a crucial role in post operative follow up, particularly in the management of complications. Many general radiologists remain unfamiliar with both the normal and abnormal appearances after bariatric surgery and this pictorial review aims to bridg...

A Multi Objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA) for Optimizing Thermal and Electrical Distribution in Tumor Ablation by Irreversible Electroporation

Background: Irreversible electroporation (IRE) is a novel tumor ablation technique. IRE is associated with high electrical fields and is often reported in conjunction with thermal damage caused by Joule heating. For good response to surgery it is crucial to produce minimum thermal damage in both tumoral and healthy tissues named Non-Thermal Irreversible Electroporation(NTIRE). Non-thermal irrev...
